5 Ways You Can Help Foster Youth Build a Future

·Beyond Eighteen Foundation

When people learn about the challenges facing foster youth who age out of the system, the most common response is: "I had no idea. What can I do?"

The good news is that there's a lot you can do — and none of it requires a special degree or a huge budget. What it requires is showing up.

Here are five meaningful ways to support foster youth in Florida and beyond.

1. Donate to Organizations Doing the Work

Direct financial support is one of the most impactful things you can do. Organizations like Beyond Eighteen Foundation use donations to fund transitional housing, mentorship programs, education support, and workforce development — the building blocks that give youth a real foundation after leaving care.

Even a small recurring gift adds up. A monthly donation of $25 can help cover the cost of a life skills workshop. A one-time gift of $100 can contribute to a youth's first apartment essentials.

2. Become a Mentor or Life Skills Coach

Research is clear: one stable, caring adult relationship can change the trajectory of a young person's life. Mentors don't need to have all the answers — they just need to show up consistently.

Beyond Eighteen Foundation actively recruits mentors and life skills coaches who can walk alongside youth as they navigate adulthood. Whether you have expertise in finance, cooking, career development, or just life in general, you have something valuable to offer.

3. Donate Items for First Apartments

When youth transition out of foster care into their own housing, they often start with nothing. First apartment registries — like the one Beyond Eighteen Foundation maintains — allow community members to donate practical items: bedding, kitchen supplies, cleaning products, and more.

These aren't luxuries. They're the basics that make a space feel like a home.

4. Spread the Word

Awareness is the first step toward change. Share stories about foster care and aging out with your network. Follow and share the social media posts of organizations doing this work. Talk to your friends, your faith community, your workplace about the issue.

The more people understand what foster youth face, the more support — financial, political, and social — flows toward solutions.

5. Advocate for Policy Change

Foster care policy is shaped at the state and federal level. Staying informed about legislation that affects foster youth — and contacting your representatives when key votes come up — is a powerful form of support that costs nothing but time.

Florida has made progress in extending support for youth beyond 18, but there's still significant work to be done. Your voice matters.

Start Today

You don't have to do all five of these things at once. Pick one. Start there. The most important thing is to begin.

Every mentor, every dollar, every shared post is a brick in the foundation that a young person will stand on. Together, we can make sure no one has to face 18 alone.
