What Happens When Foster Youth Turn 18?

·Beyond Eighteen Foundation

Every year in the United States, more than 20,000 young people "age out" of the foster care system. On their 18th birthday — or shortly after — the support structure they've known disappears. No more caseworkers. No more placements. No more safety net.

For most teenagers, turning 18 is a milestone celebrated with family, cake, and the excitement of what comes next. For youth in foster care, it can feel like a door closing.

The Reality of Aging Out

The statistics are sobering. Research consistently shows that youth who age out of foster care face dramatically higher rates of:

  • Homelessness — approximately 1 in 5 will experience homelessness within a year of leaving care
  • Unemployment — nearly half struggle to find and keep stable work by age 24
  • Educational gaps — fewer than 3% will earn a college degree
  • Involvement with the justice system — at rates far higher than their peers

These aren't character flaws. They're the predictable outcomes of a system that provides support up to a point — and then stops.

What Youth Actually Need

When a young person ages out of foster care, they often lack the most basic building blocks that most of us take for granted:

A place to live. Without family to return to, many youth have no housing plan when they leave care. Transitional housing programs can bridge this gap — but they're in short supply.

Someone in their corner. A mentor, a coach, a trusted adult who shows up consistently. Research shows that one stable relationship with a caring adult can change the trajectory of a young person's life.

Practical life skills. How to open a bank account. How to cook a meal. How to navigate a lease. These are things most of us learned from family — and many foster youth simply never had the chance.

A path forward. Education and workforce development programs that meet youth where they are and help them build toward something real.

What Beyond Eighteen Foundation Does

At Beyond Eighteen Foundation, we were founded by someone who lived this experience. Our founder, Faith Woelki, aged out of foster care herself — and she built this organization because she knows what a difference the right support at the right time can make.

Our programs address the full picture: transitional housing stability, mentorship and life skills coaching, education support, and workforce development. We serve youth across all of Florida from our base in Naples, and we believe every young person deserves a real foundation — not just a birthday and a goodbye.
